The Passover Cleanse: Day 1

Why do I do this to myself? Oh yeah. To see if I can.

As before, I’m doing the hardcore Pesach diet where I don’t eat chometz or kitniyot.  So no fermented or leavened wheat, barley, rye, oats, or spelt.  No bread (leavened wheat, oat, or rye).  No beer (fermented wheat and barley).  No whiskey (fermented wheat and rye).  Which is fine.  I could stand to cut back on that stuff for a week.

There’s also the kitniyos, those grains that can be cooked and baked in a fashion similar to chometz grains, yet are not halachically in the same considered the same category as chometz. Some examples are rice, corn, peas, mustard seed, and the whole bean family (i.e. kidney, lima, garbanzo, etc.). Luckily, the prohibition of kitniyos was limited to legumes that grew from the ground. Coffee beans grow on trees, as do cocoa beans.  So I get to have coffee and chocolate.  Which is fine.  Because if I don’t get beer, bread, or booze, or coffee or chocolate, I become a murderous prick.

So far, I’ve eaten a couple of organic ginger chews (no kitniyot in them – I looked) and a cup of Starbucks coffee, sweetened with good ole fashioned sugar.  And with that, I only have 180 more hours to go on the Passover Cleanse.
